Founded in 2004, The Oral Stage (TOS) is an independent youth theatre company comprising of youth from all walks of life, regardless of theatre background. Readings and New Works
Just came back from the reading of Instant Cafe's reading of Hero. It was a......enlightening experience. I've never really been for readings....mainly coz it usually clashes with my schedule for some odd reason so it was nice to finally make it to one. The script itself was quite strong. Tho a bit draggy in parts.....whether because of the actor or the script itself, I don't know. I thought, the mother character lacked a personal journey or character development, and certain elements that were brought up never truly explored. But this is still a work in progress so there's still room for improvement.
Also happening this weekend, was News for You, brought all the way down from Penang.......I have to say I was rather dubious about this show....so opted to join my friends for a mad cap trip up to Genting instead of watching it. I think perhaps my decision the right one....especially when Farah was critical about it. Not to say anything about Squinty but if she's complaining...then well.......yea. I'd probably have killed myself....... And the premise....was supposedly a good one too. I mean Alfred was interested......and I would be too I suppose if I weren't put off by the poster..and the group calling themselves The Ministry of Truth........really?????!!!!!
What is it with young'uns and their delusions of grandeur? Noobs always seem to have this wide eyed invincibility thing going on. I know what this fancy theatre term or this grand concept mean let's make this play or talk about this theme or do this style........it's like this nothing can touch me I know it all and best attitude.....I'll be the first to admit, when I first started out. I shared these...."delusions"...okay thoughts myself........pretentious enough to believe that just because I know what it is I can do it.......but there's always a difference.....between doing it...and doing it well....this pretentiousness can be.....annoying...
Take JH for example....the only reason I didn't go for the audition was because the audition notice was pretentious enough to go, we only want serious actors because of the material involved......REALLY????? I haven't seen it yet...but well......I haven't exactly heard incredibly wonderful things about it.......except for the cinematography which I hear is close to stunning....definite eye candy........but support Malaysian we must! Especially noteworthy ones. I hear that the director at least, has taken a step into the right direction. If all else can match up to his cinematic sight, then perhaps a prolific filmmaker he shall make. We'll just have to wait, and see.
Aside from all this....earlier this month, the 7th to be exact, KLPac had it's newest monthly offering, The Platform. An avenue for theatre noobs to take their stab at theatrical writing and acting. Write your own 15 minute short play, stage it at The Platform and stand a chance to participate in a grand old theatrical experiment next year! The aim is to unearth new talent. A wonderful and commendable venture. Zedeck 'Tembak'ed it.....to not so rave comments....But I have to say...I agree with him at some points. I had people coming up to me saying the piece on domestic abuse was so good and so brave. But like Z I could see it a mile coming and had wished she'd tackled the issue in some other way without resorting to the usual histrionics. The second piece goes without saying..... The third piece tho, is exactly what I mean by noob theatrical bravado. That, let's try being surrealist, coz it seems cool. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, heavens no. I think all of us who've done theatre for so long have been there before. Some of us have moved on to being cynics who've given into commercialism, some gallantly still try with marginal success, while others just don't know when to quit. I, am a partial cynic. I look at them and wish I were back where they are. Wide eyed and naive.
Sometimes tho, sometimes, on a big bright clear blue sky-ed day I am.

Seedlings of an idea...
Went to watch Vision Works' Actorlympics yesterday and surprise surprise I bumped into Qahar, Syat and Syed......so the usual after show activity ensued....mamak session.......long mamak session......
So eventually me and Qahar started talking.....and me being desperate to experience the acting buzz again......said we should do something.....and since Qahar said if you know the right people, and he seemed to know the right people, you can get Stor DBP for free........the seedling to stage re-vitalise that old Chaotic Harmony Theatre franchise, Shorts.....was formed.....so ladies and gents.......with crossed fingers....look forward to Shorts III.....
Those of you familiar with current Malaysian youth theatre will probably be going....and how is that different from The Oral Stage?
Well, experience for one. Most of us, the team, will most likely comprise of people who've been involved in theatre for the last....5-6 years. They'll most likely include ex-CHT-ers and ex-Rep16:21-ers. And unlike The Oral Stage, Shorts will not only comprise of original works, but will also be doing shorts or excerpts taken from established playwrights too. Another differing point will be....to a certain extent...will be higher production values....ha! how self-righteous!
Aside from that...upon talking to Soefira Jaafar who later joined us at the mamak......we then came upon the idea to establish a improv ensemble......much like, I think, Second City.....where you have a group of people who constantly do improv together......that makes it easier for this group of people to do something like Actorlympics, coz they already have this awareness of each other and this...camaraderie that helps immensely in improv.......okay..I truth...I've lost my train of thought....to let's just leave it at that shall we?
So basically.....in future..aka right after my internship.....look out for news on Shorts III and improv meets! haha!!

Where is this breath of fresh non-KLPac air located?
Right down the street from my neighbourhood (and most probably yours too).....easy mornings to work then....and no shortage of food! And supplies a plenty just a few minutes away...not to mention the Pasar Pertanian in the mornings and the Pasar Malam on Mondays.....
Nice.....
My my.......two weeks on the job and I'm already thinking of jumping ship......well....it is only an internship afterall...... ~_^

Tell Tale Heart
Right...so I caught Gavin Yap's new show, an stage adaptation of EdgarAllen Poes' Tell Tale Heart on Sunday. Courtesy of Faridah who gave a bunch of us free tickets......
So what Do I think of the show?
It could have been better.
How?
The writing could have been improved and so could the direction.
I liked the inclusion of multimedia...it's still kind of...something new in the Malaysian theatre scene...but other than that..that's about it.
Swee Keong's physicality is awesome......very...precise.......but this piece didn't really let him shine.......I thought he quite good in Girl from Ipoh. I know he mainly a dancer, but I think he'd make a pretty good actor too.
The choice of casting U-En is a bit iffy for me. I find it a bit hard sometimes to understand him. The annunciation and accent needs working on. U-En has this really distinct way of speaking that permeates all his characters. As does his posture. It makes all his characters blend into each other in a way. A bit....if you've seen it once, you've seen it all.
So what Do I think of the show?

CocoFrogism.....
Went to watch Jit's show last night, Full of Jit....and Jit introduced a new word into my vocabulary.
CocoFrogism....
Now you'll be wondering to yourself. What the heck is cocofrogism? Simply put it's basically......katak di bawah tempurung. Frog underneath the coconut shell, for the Malay uninitiated. Coco- Frog- gedit?? Coconut........frog..........okay...that's a bit...yea.....haha.....when I first heard him say it during the second half of the show....it took me a while to get it...I actually thought he might actually have meant chocolate frogs! hahaha......how Harry Potter....
But no. As with all things Jit, it's his way of commenting on the social politics of our own beloved Malaysian Society......ahh, bless.......
Anyways.....the show.....It was entertaining as all things Jit are....but perhaps it was my lack of newspaper reading and keeping up of current affairs, but I found myself laughing less than I should have. Even Renee Choy (is that how you spell your last name, luv? I really don't know) or that Malay Dato' didn't illicit the hoped number of laughs from me. I don't know.....I'm sorry, but some of the jokes were a bit weak, perhaps I didn't know how to appreciate them......I don't know....if this were kakiseni......the flaming should be starting right about now.......but I found the show a bit lacking..thankfully I paid student price for it...don't get me wrong tho....I enjoyed myself.....unlike the SPGs I liked the bits with Jit retelling a little bit of his life story...tho I do wish it would have actually gone somewhere or arrived somewhere......it was all rather organic...I'm sure he doesn't do the same show twice.......as is the nature of ICT and Jit....
Anyways....that's just my two cents worth....it was a rewarding evening...COCOFROGISM!!!! What a fun word.....

Yukio Ninagawa's working with my boys again!!!

Anyways...this time he's working with Shun and Hiroki in Shakespeare's As You Like It! Damn I wish I was in Japan!!!

I hope they come out with a DVD.....I just got Ninagawa's Romeo and Juliet with Tatsuya and Anne Suzuki (the chick from Initial D)! It has no subtitles....but hey....it's R&J...who needs 'em?
Next item on the wish list........the Shun double bill......Comedy of Errors and Titus Andronicus! Yummy!
